B.R. Williams currently has employment opportunities for School Bus Drivers and Aides. If you do not currently have a CDL with S & P endorsements we will train. No experience necessary.

We have flexible schedules that include just AM or PM routes or both. In addition to regular school route hours, we also hire drivers who want to do athletics with a 2:30-3:15 start time.

Steps to Becoming a School Bus Driver

  1. Obtain Commercial Driver License Manual at NJ Motor Vehicle Commission (link opens in new window)
  2. Study Chapters: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, and 13
  3. Take the written test at NJMVC
    • General Knowledge, P-Passenger, S-School Bus and Air Brake Endorsements
    • Cost for Permit $125.00
    • Take your 6 points of ID and proof of residency
    • No appointment needed
    • Arrive before 3pm in afternoon
    • If not positive of an answer use your skip button
    • When you have passed, ask for a driving test in Salem
    • Give yourself two weeks to get on the road training.
  4. Contact B.R. Williams, Inc. office to be scheduled with a trainer.
  5. FURTHER REQUIREMENTS:
    • Physical – Nationally Registered DOT physician, you pay.
    • Fingerprints – scheduled by BR Williams, Inc., BR pays.
    • Drug Test – scheduled by BR Williams, Inc., BR pays.

Bus Driver Job Description

Purpose Statement

The job of the bus driver was established for the purpose of providing support within the student transportation services with specific responsibilities for transporting students, overscheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions; ensuring vehicles are in safe operating condition; and ensuring the safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses.

Essential functions

  • Advises students and other passengers of appropriate behavior for the purpose of reinforcing established guidelines and maintaining passenger safety. (i.e. remain seated and face forward)
  • Assess incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations (i.e. road hazards, medical emergencies, accidents, etc.) for the purpose of resolving and/or recommending a resolution to the situation.
  • Assist students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses during normal transport and emergency situations.
  • Attend  safety meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Cleans assigned vehicles interior for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicles.
  • Conducts emergency evacuation drills at least twice a year for the purpose of ensuring efficiency or procedures and complying with mandated requirements. \
  • Drive the school bus for the purpose of transporting passengers over scheduled routes to and from school and/or field trip in a safe and timely manner. Monitors students and other passengers during transit for the purpose of ensuring safe transportation for all passengers.
  • Fuels assigned vehicle and request any needs for daily issues: checking oil, water, etc. for the purpose of maintaining vehicle in as safe operation condition.
  • Performs a pre/post trip inspections (i.e. fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and complaining with the mandated guidelines.

Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Responsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized routines; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget. There is continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.

Skills, knowledge, and Abilities

Skills are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; applying pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; operating district vehicles, fire extinguishers, two way radio, and standard office equipment; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Knowledge

Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job to include emergency evacuation techniques; area streets and locations; basic vehicle maintenance; health standards and hazards; pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; safe driving practices; safety practices and procedures; two-way radio communication; and utilizing wheelchairs, tie downs, child safety seats, lifts, etc. (by assignment)

Ability

Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods.  Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Specific ability to perform the functions of the job includes being attentive to detail; communicating with diverse groups including school age riders; displaying tact and courtesy; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; exercising sound judgment, maintaining and understating the special needs of students and their parents; maintaining confidentiality; and working with constant distractions.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: could include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent stopping, kneeling, crouching. Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. The job is performed under some extreme temperatures and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Bus Aide Job Description

Purpose Statement

The job of the bus aide was established for the purpose of providing support within the student transportation services with specific responsibilities for assisting students, including special education students during transport to and from school and/or special activities; ensuring orderly boarding and departing bus riders; and assisting the driver to ensure the safety and sanitation of assigned vehicles. School bus aide must be flexible, understanding, sympathetic, patient, and friendly.

Essential functions

  • Assist the driver in collecting and preparation of required documents regarding transportation and implementation of assigned vehicles.
  • Assist special education students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses during normal transport and emergency situations.
  • Monitors students with special needs until they are released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safe transportation of all passengers.
  • Reports observation and/or incidents (e.g., discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel for their action.
  • Secure students and/or their equipment (e.g., restraints, checks wheelchair tie downs, seat belts, etc.)
  • Aide to be stationed in a location on vehicle to be able to observe all students and maintain order.

Other Functions

  • Attend meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions. The following are the current guidelines set forth by B.R. Williams Inc as well as the school district we are transporting for.
